I was watching CNN or BBC this morning and there was a feature about Dr. Brendan who was doing repairs for iPhones at a fraction of the cost that Apple charges.
First of all, he is not a doctor but get this, a BARTENDER!! And he is doing brisk business especially with the popularity of iPhones. Most of his parts he sources from China, which incidentally is where iPhones are made anyway.
On the video interview, most of the damages were for broken, smashed, sat-on, fling away LCD screens. Dr. Brandan even relates there were some customers in tears handing over their iPhones with broken screens.
In Manila, Globe Telecom, like AT & T in the USA, has exclusive rights to the distribution of iPhones and that includes repairs. PowerMac, the local Apple reseller and service center, is not allowed to repair iPhones ----Crazy system! Since Globe Telecom is not in the cellphone repair business, iPhones received for repairs are sent to Apple Singapore God Knows When!!!! And Get this, according to the Globe Telecom girl at SM Annex, if your iPhone shows a message that the unit was dropped even if the LCD was not damaged, Globe will VOID THE WARRANTY.
