Where are the Scramble guys?

As a probable sign of passing Fads, I did not see any proliferation of Scramble booths unlike in past exhibits.

I think I saw a Scramble King guy pass by but somehow, it was not like the other previous Foodcart exhibits wherein almost every franchisor had his own version of Scramble.

Am not too sure as I could be wrong on these things but I do know when your Target Market are the Teens and Tweens, you have to be ready for the next Fad that comes around.

It's a Bird... It's a Plane... It's Super Scramble to the Rescue!!!!

We have heard of Icebreaker Scramble, Pinoy Scramble, Scramboi, Scramble King, Snowflo Scramble, Buzbox Scramble, Scramble Mania and a million variants (well, maybe not a million but still counting). . .  And now, it's Victory Franchise Inc (Fil-Chi International) version called. . . . tadahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh  SUPER SCRAMBLE!!!!!!

PIFBEX AT WTC: Pinoy Scramble Franchise

courtesy of pinoy scramble   Of the various Scramble franchises featured at the Philippine Food and Beverage Expo at the World Trade Center, the most prominent is Pinoy Scramble (Scramble King was Second).

They have 3 types of Franchise Packages:

Mall                        P180,000

Community                 120,000

School                        80,000 (but P55,555 during the Expo)

courtesy of pinoy scramble
This is sample of cart for School Package
As with most scramble packages, there are no Royalty fees nor percentage on sales.  (This last one is from the part of the franchisor.  I heard Pot Dog foodcart was levied a Percentage of Sales Charge by the mall).

While they offer Site Assistance, I was shocked at the fee to be paid to Pinoy Scramble if they do help you get a site.  It seems the fee to be paid for helping you look for the site is EQUAL TO THE RENT THAT YOU NEGOTIATE WITH THE SITE OWNER.  If non-mall, not so expensive but if it is in a Mall where rent ranges from P20,000 to P40,000, that is a huge cash outlay on the part of the franchisee.

The franchisor is Empeno-Reyes Foods Co. Ltd.

SCRAMBLed NEWS: Do You Know You Can Make 60 6oz-Cup of Scramble from One Kilo of Your Own Scramble Premix????

Yup, this is what a supplier of Scramble Premix (Strawberry Classic) told me while I was buying a cup of Scramble from a known-brand Scramble outlet in a medium-size mall in Metro Manila.

Some more SCRAMBLed TRIVIA:

1.  If you can get 60 6oz-cups of Scramble from a kilo of Scramble Premix and the Premix costs only P100/kg, you could Gross P320 from every kilo as a 6oz-cup of Scramble sells for P7!!!!!

2.  The same Scramble premix supplier was trying to convince me to set-up my own scramble and earn a lot more, instead of getting a franchise.  Hmmmmmmmmmmmm What do you think, readers?

3.  In that same mall, there used to be only one Scramble but according to the counterperson of the first outlet, his sales has gone down by about 50% since opening last year BECAUSE THE MALL ALLOWED ANOTHER SCRAMBLE OUTLET TO SET-UP JUST  30 STEPS AWAY.  His daily sales is now only P2,000/day.

4.   The other Scramble outlet (of a known-brand) is run by the owner himself (without any crew to save on costs) and his sales is only P1,500/day.  The owner was telling me he is planning to set-up another outlet in his house across a school but this time, he will use his own Concept (i.e. own name and use premixes etc from third parties).

5.  At the Ever Gotesco Grand Central Supermarket area, there are 4 Scramble outlets, 2 siomai outlets (but there must be about 10 in the whole GRand Central Mall), 2 sisig (sisig in the city pulled out), 2 pearl shakes (Black Pearl and Zagu) etc.

One of the counterpersons told me that Sales is getting cannibalized and let the strongest survive!!! Woe is the small business owner.

6.  Strangely, the 2 scramble outlets prepared their Scrambles in 2 ways:  One used a Premix while the other mixes-up the different ingredients themselves.  The former claims better shelf life and less wastage while the latter who mixes the individual ingredients claims to have a better product.

7.  Likewise, both outlets crushed ice differently. One uses the P15,000-Automatic crusher which is good for heavy orders while the other uses the Industrial Manual crusher because it gives a more fine mixture.  Which is which?

8.  Some Scramble outlets use Buttermilk ((better tasting) but others use Skim Milk (better texture visually). Which one?

9.  Lastly, Scramble is the Star of the Foodcart business at the moment (Twisted potatoes coming in) but with malls not controlling the number of Scramble outlets in a given selling area, will this be bad for future and existing scramble owners?????  PRETTY SCARY, DON'T YOU THINK?

Let me know YOUR TAKE ON THIS. . . . . . .

Why Not Set-up Your Own Scramble Brand?

During the SME Food and Franchise Expo at the WTC, I came across the Bubbles Best Food Supplies Corp., Quezon City and they specialize in supplying the Premixes of the following:

1.  Scramble Classic Vanilla (strangely, it is Vanilla Flavor that gives the Strawberry color of most Scramble miz)

courtesy of bubbles best food

2.  Gulaman drink

courtesy of bubbles best foods

3.  Gulaman Jelly mix

4.  Pearl Shake mix

As an example, the Scramble mix is sold at P130/kg and you can make so many cups from a single kilo thereby increasing your margin.

A Scramble Business with an Initial Capital of Just P18,000!

I am sure many of you Would-be Entrepreneurs would like to jump into the Scramble Business but cannot find the means to raise P65,000, much less P200,000 (for a Top-brand Scramble Franchise).

How about if I told you that there is a company that is offering a Scramble business for just P18,000?  . . . . Included in the P18,000 is a simple cart with tarpauline signage (not lighted panaflex), manual ice crusher, styro boxes and condiment rack for your toppings.  Also, no franchise fee and no royalty to worry about.  You also do not have to renew any franchise as you are basically buying the cart and equipment from them.

courtesy of binondo metalcraftcourtesy of binondo metalcraft  Also, no binding supply contract, meaning, you can source the supplies from them or you can find your own supplier.  Sounds Fantastic??!!

The pics show a particular brand name but you are expected to provide for your brand name and logo design.  Just send them a JPEG file and there you have your own-concept Scramble biz.

courtesy of binodo metalcraft  This is Binondo Metalcraft.  They are better known as a kitchen and restaurant local fabricator but they branched out into the Foodcart making business.  Find them in all the trade shows featuring foodcarts.

If you find their cart construction too basic (what else can you expect for the price?), you can ask them to make a quote and a simple CAD-CAM lookalike of your own design.  Prices of course can go as high as P30,000.  Adding panaflex lighting signages will cost just P2,000.

Which is the Better Ice Crusher for Scramble?

During the Phil SME & Franchise Expo, I saw two outfits selling two different kinds of Ice Crusher for Scramble making:

courtesy of judea enterprisescourtesy of judea enterprises  1.  The one offered by Judea Enterprises cost P15,000 and is the type being used by Jollibee, Pinoy Ice Scramble etc.  It has a plastic body shell.

courtesy of binodo metalcraft
Lever is lifted, ice placed inside & then cover is closed while ice is being crushed
  2. The other type is a simple but heavy-duty like Ice Crusher (all-metal body) and is being sold by Binondo Metalcraft as part of a Scramble foodcart package complete with Styro boxes, condiment tray, mixers etc for a total of only P18,000.

Of the two, the first one seems more suited for mass production of Crushed ice for scramble because of its bigger capacity.  The second one seems more suited to lesser volume sales as in one by one order and not a huge line of waiting customers.

The Top Model is Automatic in the sense that you put in the ice, press a button and it crushes the ice.  The Bottom Option is Manual which means it will only crush ice for as long as you push the lever down.  When you remove your hand, ice crushing stops.

Of course, you cannot ignore the fact that for the price of the Top model (P15,000), you get a whole scramble foodcart with all the equipment you need for only P15,000 if you decide to get the Bottom Option.

Will appreciate any feedback that you can give and may be even other suppliers.

Should I Get P150,000 & Up Top-Brand Scramble Franchise or an P18,000 Own-Brand Scramble Business??

courtesy of icebreaker scramble
Icebreaker Scramble -- Undisputed King???!!!!
  1.   Of the Scramble franchises on offer, franchise packages can range from as low as P21,000 (Mister Scramble) to P148,000 (Scramble Kid of JC Fran) or a Top-brand Scramble Franchise (P200,000 up). Add to the franchise package is another P200,000 or more for Mall rent, CUSA, Aricon, Security deposits and other incidental charges.

2.  There are outfits that offer to sell a Scramble food cart with ice crusher, styro, premix etc for only P18,000 but you provide your own brand name.  It is technically a sale of equipment and therefore there are no franchise fees or Non-Compete Lock-in clauses to worry about and you are free to sell anything including hotdogs etc alongside the scramble.

COURTESY OF SCRAMBLE KING
Franchise Packages from P90,000 to P195,000
  3.  Some would say get the Top-brand as it will be an Easy-sale (think Icebreaker Scramble or Zagu for Pearl shakes) but but  . . .  most of the prime sites like SM, Robinson's, Waltermart etc are already locked-in by the franchisor as company-owned outlets.  Where do you go?

4.  On the other hand, if you do your Own -brand, people may not notice you if there is a Manila Scramble or Icebreaker in front of your outlet (P.S.  Malls have the habit of putting multiple outlets of the same concept Ex.  Ever Grand Central Supermarket has 4 Scramble outlets in one area alone!)

5.  More importantly, if the Scramble offers only one basic flavor (Vanilla), do you think I am already too late in the game as people might start tiring of scramble with so many already sprouting everywhere????

First in that Mall but Not Anymore & that Somebody Got Even a Better Spot. What to Do?

This must be what is going through the mind of Manila Scramble.

You see, for a while, Manila Scramble was the only Scramble outlet in Robinson Galeria and though their location is not in the crowded Foodcourt itself but rather off to the side of the former Fountain Area leading to the Central Escalators, people were lining up (and this is still the case even now) to get their hands on the Scramble craze.

pinoy ice scramble
Pinoy Ice Scramble at Rob Galeria Foodcourt
Suddenly, Pinoy Ice Scramble appeared and they were able to secure a spot right at the Foodcourt just in front of Tokyo Tokyo.  People coming from the EDSA Main Entrance will see the Pinoy Ice Scramble almost before seeing any other food cart.  (Fantastic how Pinoy Ice Scramble did that!!!)

courtesy of pinoy ice scramble
Pinoy Ice Scramble (side view)
While Manila Scramble is still going strong, I am sure they must have lost some sales to the newcomer Pinoy Ice Scramble.
Like it or not, Manila Scramble will have to do something about Pinoy Ice Scramble having a better location.  Am sure the Impulse buyers (or first-time scramble eaters) will see the Pinoy Ice Scramble and try it first--- They cannot see the Manila Scramble outlet unless they go further down the Foodcourt area.

With strong demand for space to locate Scramble franchises of all brands, Mall Leasing has started doubling-up the number of scramble franchises in their leasable areas.

Megamall suddenly had Icebreaker Scramble after having two other scramble outfits in the area already, Buzbox Scramble and Scramble Mania.  But this will not be so much concern as Megamall is huge and in two buildings.

But look at Ever Grand Central Supermarket where there are 3 scrambles (Pinoy Ice Scramble, Scramble Madness and other newcomer) in a small area.  In fact two of the scramble outlets are practically facing each other!!!

Before getting a Scramble outlet, discuss exclusivity or territorial protection with the Mall Leasing.  You might get a cheaper franchise (P60,000) but not a brand name scramble and then, the Mall suddenly locates an Icebreaker Scramble or Buzbox Scramble in front of yours,  Can you survive?

More Scramble Updates: Lines. . Lines. . Manila Scramble's the Name!

courtesy of Manila Scramble  I went to Robinson's Galeria Foodcourt to meet a client who availed of my Lotto Consultation Service on How to Setup and Operate Your Own Lotto Outlet.  Since I was early, I decided to check-out the Manila Scramble that my friend told me about.

It was still early in the day but I finally saw the Manila Scramble located not in the Foodcourt but in the middle hallway from the former fountain area leading to the escalators.  Despite not being in the main foodcourt area, it already had a line. And according to my friend, this is the same every day.

They also have an outlet in Robinsons Ermita among other places.  Pricing at P10-P17 is like Icebreaker Scramble.
