2010 AFFI FILIPINO FRANCHISE SHOW: The Corner Bakery is Very Much Alive!!!

While it is true that we Filipinos eat Rice as a main staple, our consumption for Bread and baked goods has definitely increase.  Look at the success of Gardenia which has trumped all local bakeries and this Malaysian-owned company is now planning to open a huge factory in Cebu, right in the heartland of Julie's Bakeshop.

courtesy of julie's bakeshop  Not fazed by the above, Julie's Bakeshop just announced that they have, I think, more than 800 branches already and are targeting to open many more this year.

2010 AFFI FILIPINO FRANCHISE SHOW: Another Take on the Healthy Fruit Drink

Many are starting to turn to Fruit-based drinks like Fruit Magic, Kush, Mango Farm, Big Chill and many more as people are trying to make an effort at better health without giving-up their sweet tooth.

Target market is people who are conscious of their health and have the money to spend.  Fresh fruit-based drinks are generally more expensive (P60 to more than a P100/drink versus Zagu at P36 or even gulaman drink at P10).

2010 AFFI FILIPINO FRANCHISE SHOW: Set-up Your Own "Siomai Haus" or "Mrs. Siomai" and Invest Less/Earn More!!!

To get a branded Siomai Franchise (Siomai House or Master Siomai, The Number 1 and 2 in the country now) will mean the following:

1.  Franchise Package of P250,000 (excluding mall or store improvements)

2.  Your Food Margin on the Siomai is a low 20% (which means YOU HAVE TO SELL MANY SIOMAIs TO EARN)

3.  You have to follow the Franchisor's instructions to the letter. THE FRANCHISOR IS YOUR BOSS AND BUSINESS PARTNER.

What if you do not want have a boss, want to earn bigger margins and do not want to spend (or do not have) P250 thousand to spend?

Lines forming at the JCM Foodlink booth

ENTER JCM FOODLINK.  They will sell you the siomai and siopao. You put-up your own brand and sell.

Branded siomai franchises will sell you the siomai at 20% less than your selling price of P25/order of 4-pc siomai or P20.  JCM will sell you their siomai at P2/pc or P8/order and you sell at P25 for a MARGIN OF 68% (vs 20% of the branded siomais).

Of course, Siomai House and Master Siomai have brand-recalls. You will need to promote your products LOUDLY but still, a 300% difference in margins is something serious.

Given the high rent from most malls, a siomai foodcart should sell at least P15,000 to P25,000 a day at 25% markup.   In fact, some siomai foodcarts exceed that as in the case of the Siomai House in Ayala MRT that reportedly sells as high as P60-70 thousand a day!!!

2010 AFFI FILIPINO FRANCHISE SHOW: RICE MEALS AND RICE IN A BOX, The Filipino is a Rice-Devouring Human Being

Despite the proliferation of Bakeries, bakeshops and the like, Rice will always be a staple.  Look at Red Ribbon and Goldilocks, both of which are bakeshops that offer a variety of rice meals.  A Filipino's stomach will never be full unless there's rice. KFC and Jollibee have Chicken with Rice as their Flagship products.

During the AFFI Filipino Franchise Show, I saw 2 outfits offering RICE favorites:

(RBX booth)

RBX had been around for a while with their Rice in a Box.  Remember at one time, there were so many Rice-In-A-Box franchises mshrooming left and right.  Now, there are not so many but there are still some. Maybe not in a box but in a styro and THEY NOW CALL THEM RICE TOPPINGS.

2010 AFFI FILIPINO FRANCHISE SHOW: Stick Em Up or in Tagalog-speak, Tuhog!

As traditional as Eating-On-The-Run are food on a stick (skewered in Chef-speak too) and the choices ranges from the American BBQ & hotdog to the Filipino Street Foods-On-A-Stick like Fishballs, Squidballs and chicken innards (intestine or isaw, chicken head & feet, coagulated chicken blood---hahahaha).

During the recent AFFI Filipino Franchise Food Show, there were samples of the Filipinos' passion to eat anything on a stick:

2010 AFFI FILIPINO FRANCHISE SHOW: Sisig Without the Beer

Sisig used to be associated with pulutan (beer appetizer) and beer.  Then, Gerry's and Dencio's  Filipino Restaurants started offering Sisig not only made in the original chopped Pig face etc  but also Pork-free as in with Chicken, Tuna or Bangus (Milkfish) varieties but these were quite pricey yet as these were served in fine dining restaurants.

Now comes the food cart medium and Sisig is available as Topping for steaming Rice.  Most popular is Sisig Hooray (Robinson's Galeria, SM Makati, Ever Commonwealth) but last I checked, they do not franchise.

courtesy of sisg in the city  During the AFFI Filipino Franchise Show, I saw Sisig in the City on display.

I saw Sisig in the City at Waltermart North EDSA and they serve pork, chicken and bangus with prices ranging from P55 to P65 per order.  If is a bit pricey when you think you can get a One-piece chicken with rice and soup from Mang Inasal for only P49.  But then again, there are customers who may just like Sisig for a change.
