In the Philippines, a tricycle is a motorcycle that has a sidecar designed to carry NOT ONE, NOT TWO BUT . . . . A LOT OF PEOPLE. It may not be safe but heck, it's all over the place.
A motorcycle could be had with a downpayment as low as P2,500 (or US$50) and a plain-Jane plain sheetmetal sidecar for P10,000 (US$200). From that initial investment, the owner has a private car, a cargo van, a mini-mini school bus as well as a people mover all rolled-into-one that can carry maybe three adults behind the driver, 4 adults or 6 kids inside the sidecar and another 2 kids hanging-on the rear fender of the sidecar.
It's an almost 10-seater for US$50. Parents of school kids pay on a monthly basis while adult riders pay as they ride. By the way, fares for tricylces are several times more than a bus ride over the same distance.
It;s quite attractive for small business entrepreneurs because of the low capital, low maintenance and constant demand for transportation in the inner small roads of Manila.
