Another Food Cart Extravaganza at the WTC: The Philippine SME & Franchise Expo 2010

Last November 18, 2010, I was rushing to get to the SMX thinking that this new Franchise Show would be there.  I even felt lucky to find a parking slot as the place was already full despite it being 10am only.  Upon reaching the Ground floor, I was surprised that what was on exhibit was a Car show.  It was then I realized that I was in the wrong place.  It's at the World Trade Center. Jeeeez

courtesy of phil sme & franchise expo 2010    The Philippine SME and Franchise Expo 2010 is probably the third or fourth Exhibit in the last 4 months featuring food cart franchises which seems to be the rage this 2010.

At the SME Expo, there were about 10 different Scramble franchises and maybe 2 Twistix-style food carts on offer.  I feared that the Scramble business might be getting too crowded especially since it is at every mall and roadside already and people might soon tire of it.

If you remember a few years ago, Pearl Shakes led by Zagu and Orbitz were all the rage and we saw franchise packages reaching P500,000 and there seemed to be a Zagu at every street corner.  Now, Zagu is still there but not as many outlets and Orbitz is just in a few select malls.

courtesy of phil sme & franchise expo 2010In the coming days, I will feature the different food carts that caught my eye and leave it up to you guys to select what you think is the best. Note that dominant players like Icebreaker Scramble, Buzbox Scramble and Manila Scramble were not present as well as Twisitx.

PCSO ad announcing estimate Jackpot for 6/55 Lotto Game

Yup.  Nothing much to say after the above Post title.

Despite the odds of winning in the 6/55 Grand Lotto Game, I would say millions of people, both regular and first-time Lotto players--- rich and poor alike, are braving the heat by lining-up at the lotto outlet.

When the Jackpot was P495 Million, people said it could reach Half a Billion Pesos!!  That Level was breached last Monday when the 6/55 hit P543,000,000.  With PCSO estimates at P620 Million which is usually on the conservative side, the Jackpot just might reach a Billion Pesos!!!!!

Lines. . .  Lines . . .  And more lines.

Is it Worth It Paying So Much for a Franchise?

phil government
Should I GAMBLE MY LIFESAVINGS on a franchise?
I have on quite a few occasions encountered  people wanting to start a business and asking if it is worth paying so much for a franchise, to wit:

1.  A Siomai House franchise is about P250,000.  A Top brand Scramble about P150,000 to P200,000.  Other franchise package still entail additional investments on the part of the franchisee like kitchen equipment (mixer, scales etc) that are not part of the franchise, crew uniform.

2. If you want to be in a mall, expect to pay P20,000 to P35,000/month in rent. That's not all, you still have to pay CUSA (or Common Utility, Security, Janitorial) of P2,000/mo or more, Aircon charge of P2,000 or more, Pest Control etc.  You will be expected to join Mall-sponsored Promotional Events by way of sponsorship. (Add 12% VAT to all figures.Hay!)

3.  If you set-up a Siomai or Sisig or some foodcart, you may be required to rent a separate Storage Room in the basement of the mall to store your chest freezers, dry materials like styro packs, etc and rent is as much as the kiosk itself especially if the area is big.

4.  If you need electrical and telephone/DSL landline and your kiosk location is far from the PLDT/Meralco Main Distribution Panelboard, the mall will charge you Feeder Line fee which can reach up to P39,000 or more (it's a per meter charge).  This does not include yet the Installation charge of the Telecom carrier.

5.  Add mall rental of P35,000 per month (before VAT) and rental deposit of between 3 months (for medium-size or single-location malls)  to 12 months (for the top chain malls).

6.  If you want to put tarpaulin standees around the mall to let everybody know you are in the mall, it will cost you P500 or more per standee a month.  NOTHING IS FREE.

BTW, do not expect the franchisor to conduct any meaningful promotions on your behalf (other than a half-hearted opening day support which you will pay for too)  and so, you better be active MARKETING YOUR FRANCHISE!

7. If you cannot afford the name brands of say Scramble at P150,000/franchise, should you get the lesser known brand at P60,000/franchise?  Hard to say what is the best to do as you will pay the same mall overhead whether known brand or not.

8.  You will sign a 6-month or 12-month rent contract but if after 3 months of losses, you decide to call it quits--- You might be required by the mall to pay also the remaining months of the contract and forfeit your security deposit.

9.  If the franchisor has a poor Supply Chain or Logistics department, you may have to pick-up the supplies yourself thereby increasing your overhead still.

10.. Again, if the franchisor has poor logistics, your kiosk may ran out of stocks and you lose customers and still HAVE TO PAY THE RENT. (Note:  I had a Blog comment from a reader complaining that after he has paid for a Scramble franchise, he is having difficulty with supplies delivery and coordination with the franchisor.)

11.  You will treat your Security Deposit as an Expense because the only time you will see your Security Deposit again is when you decide to close shop.

12. The Franchise fee is also to be treated as an Expense too as that goes to the franchisor as income.  Likewise, many franchisors charge a Renewal Franchise fee of maybe same amount or half of the original franchise fee (adjusted for price increase!!!)  after say 3 years.

13.  So you better make sure you can earn back the Franchise fee plus Security Deposit plus your  Capital outlays during the first 3 years and still earn a reasonable profit.

14.  On the other hand, if you start your own brand:

a.  The Mall may not give you space as they always allocate the space to the known franchisor and let the franchisor to whom they will give the franchise to.

b.  What you save in franchise fees can be used to lower your selling prices or advertise more.

c.  You will have to setup your own Purchasing, Commissary/kitchen, warehouse and Logistics capabilities like storage and delivery truck.

d.  By not getting a franchise, you will have to prepare yourself to be a really HANDS-ON owner.

e.  You will have to personally hire, train, deploy and fire your crew as well as be the payroll master and personnel department all-in-one.

f. Should you pay yourself a salary (and increase the store's expenses?)  Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

No Winner of Nov 17 6/55 Lotto Draw. JACKPOT NOW AT P495 MILLION. Lines Continue at all Lotto Outlets!

richardjosephsiyNobody was able to bet correctly the 6 number combination of the PCSO Lotto 6/55 Draw last night.  As a result, the Jackpot has now reached a Record=breaking whopping P485,597,376.80, or P485 Million!!!!!

RICHARD JOSEPH SIY  Last Monday, the PCSO Lotto 6/55 Jackpot stood as P456 Million.  Which means, the Jackpot has increased by a huge P39 Million (to P495 Million)  in just 3 days!!!  This also means that more and more people including first-time Lotto bettors are flocking to the lotto outlets across the country.

This is good for the Lotto business as New Customers are being created when people see the huge lines and the BIG JACKPOT signs posted in the lotto outlet, splashed in the newspapers as well as shouted daily in the radio broadcasts.

THE FEELING OF MOST PEOPLE IS THAT THEY BETTER PLACE THEIR BETS NOW WHILE THE GIANT JACKPOT HAS NOT YET BEEN WON AS IT WILL TAKE A LONG TIME BEFORE THE JACKPOT WILL REACH THAT BIG AMOUNT AGAIN!!!! No need to market the lotto.  It will sell itself.

Long Lines Continue at All Lotto Outlets as PCSO Grand Lotto 6/55 Jackpot is Expected to Hit P402 Million During Tomorrow's November 13 Draw!!!!

richardjosephsiy  The Jackpot during the last PCSO 6/55 Grand Lotto Draw reached P383,405,234.40 and there were NO WINNERS.  Tomorrow evening at 9pm, the 6/55 Grand Lotto Jackpot is expected to hit P402 Million as per the PCSO ad that appeared in today's issue of the Daily Inquirer.

While nobody won the last 6/55 Grand Lotto Jackpot, there were 81 who guessed 5 (out of 6 numbers of the winning combination) of the numbers and won themselves P150,000.

richardjosephsiy  Please note that there were 81 people who could have won whereas in previous draws of the 6/55 Grand Lotto, there were only a handful (below 20 persons) who were able to guessed at least 5 number.

The Significance of these 81 persons is that there are more and more people playing the 6/55 despite naysayers and doubters saying they are not playing the Grand Lotto 6/55 as there are just too many combinations (more than 20 million possible combinations). When the pot is hitting P400 million (or even Half a Billion pesos), PEOPLE WILL NOTICE AND PLAY.

This bodes well for the Lotto Agent as there will be more and more customers at their outlets.  My experience is that even if the 6/55 Grand Lotto is still on Saturday, Nov 12, many people advance bet the 6/55 as early as Wednesday to avoid the lines.  What will happen is that these same people who made advance bets will still come back on Saturday to make a last-minute bet when they see the Jackpot Updates showing the rise in the Jackpot amount!!

Lotto Outlets Make a Killing as Lotto 6/55 Jackpot Hits Record P354,596,432.40 AND STILL NO WINNER!!!

courtesy of pcso  The Grand Lotto or otherwise known as the 6/55 Lotto Game Jackpot has hit a record P354 MILLION which beat the last highest of P347 Million of the 6/49 which was won by only two lucky bettors.

richardjosephsiy  And get this, there is still no winner of the 6/55 which means long lines at lotto outlets all over the Philippines will continue.  Who knows, P400 Million or even, HALF A BILLION PESOS!!!!!

richardjosephsiy  The Lotto Business has not looked brighter than this.  My fellow agent in Makati sold last week a total of more than P900,000 of Lotto Sales which at 5% means the agent had a Gross Revenue of about P45,000 from just One Week's Sales!!!  Think about that!!

Today is November 1 but to the Lotto Afficionados, This is The Day They Could Win The P288 Million 6/55 Jackpot!!!!

lotto outlet; richardjosephsiy  Unbeknown to many non-lotto players, November 1 is a regular Draw Date for the PCSO Lotto Games and this day, November 1, 2010 is a Special Day as the 6/55 Lotto Jackpot is expected to exceed the P288 Million from last Saturday's 6/55 Lotto draw wherein nobody won.

lotto outlet; richardjosephsiy  Yesterday, October 31, many of my lotto customers placed advance bets for 6/55 just in case they are not able to get back from visiting their Departed Ones in the country's cemeteries.  Who knows, their Alaga number combinations might just come out and it will be a terrible loss if they did not bet!!!!

lotto outlet; richardjosephsiyWhile it was a holiday (no school classes), my lotto customers still had to drop-by my lotto outlet to place their bets lest they miss-out on the P288 Million Jackpot.  (P.S.  The highest Jackpot ever reached was the P347 Million of the 6/49 Lotto which was won by 2 individuals!).
