Business is Booming in the Motel - Hotel Business.

The Motel business in other countries like the USA have always catered to the business traveller mostly salesmen on the road and for families wanting to see the countryside on the "cheap" and why not, rates are definitely very affordable but amenities of course is nothing compared to the 5-Star hotels (but then again, these motels do not have 5-Star Room Rates too).

In the Philippines, the mere mention of the word "motel" elicits snickers as motels are associated with couples going on an illicit affair, and I think, these illicit affairs (meetings) are still their bread and butter business especially to the youth.

There are other small hotel outfits that have sprung up over the years but are not as famously known to the masses as motels and these are outfits like Microtel and Day's Hotels (which is a foreign-owned franchise). But the one making waves of sort is the Gokongwei-owned Go Hotel (The first one is along EDSA corner Pioneer St. in Mandaluyong city.

The Go Hotel is not a bare-bottoms outfit as they offer amenities that cater to the business traveller such as WIFI Internet connection (some motels also offer this), Security safes, orthopedic pillows and the like.  the novel way of accepting booking is almost solely thru the Internet and just like sister-company Cebu Pacific, if one books earlier, hotel room rates are much lower (as low as less than P400 a night).

Surprisingly, I asked my friend to book about 2 rooms for our families and she was told rooms are booked solid till the end of the year!  Go Hotel intends to set-up several more hotels in selected destination spots in the Visayas and Mindanao serviced by Cebu Pacific, of course.

On the moral values side, there are those who are against the erection of more motels because of the belief that it encourages illicit affairs and such as can be seen in the picture below.  I spotted this signage "No to Motel"  just across a seemingly-abandoned condominium project along EDSA that implies is going to be made into another Motel/ Hotel.

signage spotted just after SM Annex on the left side of EDSA on the way to Monumento.
